Why Do Lentigines Occur?

Solar lentigo is a flat, brownish pigmented lesion primarily associated with UV exposure and skin aging.

It appears as a flat, brownish pigmented lesion resulting from excessive melanin cell activation, leading to over-pigmentation in specific areas.

If continuously exposed to UV light, melanin production continues, and over time,

the skin's regenerative capacity and pigment metabolism may decrease, causing the lesions to gradually darken and expand. They typically appear on the face, back of the hands, and arms, and their borders are usually

clear and dark brown, which is a common characteristic.

Location of Lentigo Distribution

Lentigines (solar lentigines) primarily

are pigmentary lesions that appear in the epidermal layer (Epidermis) of the skin. This means that

melanocytes within the basal layer become excessively activated due to UV exposure, leading to melanin pigment being

locally overproduced and accumulated. Upon tissue examination, the condition shows excessive melanin within the epidermis without affecting the dermis deeply,

and the borders with the surrounding skin are generally observed to be distinct.

Therefore, targeting pigments in the epidermal and upper dermal layers, 755nm

long-pulse Alexandrite laser treatment can be effective. This laser

requires a treatment plan distinct from those for melasma or complex pigmentary lesions that involve deeper dermal areas.

Characteristics of the 755nm Wavelength

The 755nm wavelength has a high absorption rate for melanin pigment and is an Alexandrite laser wavelength that safely reaches the entire epidermal layer and the upper dermal layer.

The 755nm laser, delivered in a long-pulse mode, transmits high-output energy to pigmentary lesions with precise control in milliseconds (ms). Melanocytes absorb this light energy, convert it into heat, and then efficiently break down the pigment

particles. Some of the broken-down pigments undergo natural metabolic processes on the skin surface,

and can be shed along with fine dead skin cells according to the skin's regeneration cycle; the remaining portion is absorbed by macrophages within the body and

naturally expelled. Through this process, the destroyed pigments gradually disappear, and lentigines can noticeably fade or

improve.
